Despite an urgent and deepening need for relief aid in Myanmar following the devastation of Cyclone Nargis, supplies and relief workers have encountered serious obstacles reaching the affected regions. On Friday, authorities in Myanmar seized two aircraft-loads of supplies that the United Nations World Food Program, prompting the World Food Program to temporarily suspend airlifts. Attempts to airlift supplies into Myanmar will resume on Saturday, 5/9. Myanmar has now agreed to allow entry to one U.S. cargo aircraft with relief supplies on Monday, 5/12. At this time, the American Red Cross has informed us that due to the difficulty of transporting supplies into the region, the best way to contribute to the ARC’s relief effort is to provide financial contributions to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. We will continue to monitor developments in Myanmar and provide the latest information about on-the-ground activity and urgent needs in bringing much-needed relief to the region.
